Written in 2005, this Chorale Prelude is a setting of the Advent hymn "Veni, Veni Emmanuel" for wind ensemble. The piece was composed for the California High School Band, under the direction of Doug Nordquist. The melody of this Christian Advent hymn can be traced back to the 15th century.
In this setting, the wind ensemble version is transposed from the key of E minor to F minor. The work begins with the percussion section softly establishing a rhythmic pulse and creating a mood that prepares for the entrance of the piccolo solo. As the piccolo, joined by the flute section, increases in energy and volume, other instruments gradually join in. The full band reaches a cadence at letter E, where the hymn tune is clearly presented and played with majesty. Notably, one of the counter-lines includes a brief reference to Bach’s "Little Fugue in G Minor."
