Program Notes
This work, composed in 1995, is scored for String Orchestra and Two Pianos. The 1st and 2nd Violins have distinct melodic material that repeats throughout the piece. As the music progresses, the distance between the entrances of the 1st and 2nd violin parts begins to get farther apart. Eventually, the melodic material realigns to the beginning of the music. The modulations at the interval of the minor 3rd are sudden and random, often in the middle of the melodic material. The piece is propelled forward by the ostinato patterns of the Cellos, Basses, and Pianos. The title comes from the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence -
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.—"

Life can be hectic, challenging, fast-paced, with sudden and unexpected twists and turns that may or may not be all bad. Happiness is a choice amid life's challenges.
