Program Notes

 

This work, composed in 1995, is written for a string orchestra accompanied by two pianos. The first and second violins feature distinct melodic themes that recur throughout the piece. As the music unfolds, the time between the entrances of the first and second violin parts gradually increases. Eventually, the melodic material returns to its initial form. The modulations occurring at intervals of a minor third are sudden and unpredictable, often occurring within the middle of the melodic lines. The piece is driven forward by the repeated patterns in the cellos, basses, and pianos. The title comes from the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence - 


"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.—"

Life can be hectic, challenging, fast-paced, with sudden and unexpected twists and turns that may or may not be all bad. Happiness is a choice amid life's challenges.

She is more precious than rubies,  And all the things you may desire cannot compare with her. Length of days is in her right hand, In her left hand riches and honor.
