Program Notes

“…from the rising of the sun…” is an impression and reflection on Psalm 50:1.
“The Mighty One, God, the Lord speaks; he summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting .”
The opening fanfare begins in the woodwinds and mallets. The flutes alternate between the tonalities of Eb and Db while the clarinets do the reverse, Db and Eb giving the rhythmic figure a “bi-tonal” quality to the sound. The woodwinds and brass trade the rhythmic fanfare back and forth throughout the opening section. At rehearsal letter A, the woodwind figure continues against a new fanfare figure in the brass. The work alternates between fanfares and lyrical passages.

The work was composed within comfortable ranges for all sections. The parts for clarinet remain below the break until letter F, where the first clarinets have the option of taking the upper octave.
