Program Notes
An impression and reflection on Psalm 1:3:“He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bear fruit in its season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.”
This work which premiered on December 20, 2024, was composed as a gift to Glen Kamida, an amazing teacher, musician, and friend to many. Glen’s 40-year teaching career has left a wonderful legacy and a truly positive influence on his students, who range from early childhood to ages 80+. (See Glen’s non-profit work with nTyme www.ntyme.org) “... like a tree planted beside flowing streams...” was written with the younger musician in mind, with limited rhythms and ranges.
Given that Glen is a noted clarinetist, the orchestration places the clarinet section at the beginning of the work with a flowing progression of notes reflective of a quiet stream. The work weaves back and forth between quiet, flowing, and majestic passages.
